To do this the students are to line up facing the flags in the order of the highest rank to lowest rank from left to right. Black belt students are to line up at a ninety-degree angle from the colored belt students. When the instructor turns and faces the flags, the highest ranked student is to call everyone to attention by saying “Cha-ryo”, which means attention, and then command everyone to bow by saying “Kyong-ye”, which means bow. Do this with your attention focused on the flags. (Bowing to the flag of the United States is a demonstration of honor and respect. Doing this indicates that we are proud to live in the united States and are grateful for the freedoms and laws that we have that enable us to study Tae Kwon Do. Bowing to the Republic of Korea’s flag is a demonstration of honor and respect for the birthplace of Tae Kwon Do) When the instructor turns around to face the students, the highest ranked student again calls out these commands, this time you bow to the instructor and the instructor bows to the students. At the same time, the instructor is thanking you for coming.
