He was the twenty-first Vice President of the United States of America. He was also Governor of, United States Senator and Congressman to the U. S. House of Representatives from the State of Indiana.

Indian Territorial House of Representatives 1813-1814, U.S. Representative from Indiana at-large 1816-1822, Governor State of Indiana 1822-1825, U.S. Senator from Indiana 1825-1837. Hendricks County, Indiana was named in honor of William.

William Chalmers Hendricks

He was known as Will or Billy to his friends and family. He was born in the year 1825 in Ligonier Valley, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. After the death of his grandfather, Abraham Hendricks, Sr. nearly the entire family of Abraham, Sr. moved to Indiana. Abraham, Jr., Billy's father, settled in Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana where the family were merchants. Billy left for the gold fields of California in April 1849. He settled in the Morris Ravine area of Butte County, California where he married Susan Elizabeth "Lizzie" Glass. After the outlawing of Hydraulic Gold Mining, Billie was elected California State Senator for Butte County and later California Secretary of State.

The Clan was photographed at Concow, California on July 4, 1884 by the oldest child of Louis Glass, Maria Lavinia Glass Sawyer. Mrs. Sawyer was one of top photographers of her day in the State of California. Known family members are: Second from left - Lizzie Glass Hendricks; Center man holding the USA flag - Louis Glass (Lizzie's brother); In front of Louis, Thomas Pollock Hendricks (brother of William Chalmers Hendricks); Standing to the right of Thomas, Mary "Mame" Perry Hendricks; Small girl standing in front of Thomas, Winona Elizabeth Hendricks; Boy seated with large hat in front of Winona, Scott Springer Hendricks; Fifth from right holding cigar and wearing derby, William Chalmers Hendricks; Last boy seated at the right, Louis Victor "Lou" Hendricks; Seated to the left of Lou, Max Hendricks; Standing to the right of Billie, Sam Hendricks and to his right William Chalmers Hendricks, Jr. Sam, William Jr., Max, Lou, Scott and Winona were all children of Billie and Lizzie. There are a total of five (5) living descendants of the marriage of Billie and Lizzie: Myself, my two sisters Ann and Paula, and my two children Renée Patricia and Michael Scott.

The family home for the family of William Chalmers Hendricks and Susan Elizabeth Glass Hendricks. The home was not far from Lizzie's parents home and near The Hendricks Mine. WC was an hydraulic gold miner at the time of his marriage to Lizzie.




Elizabeth Winona Hendricks

Winona was born December 1880, Cherokee, CA and died September 1966 Sacramento, CA. She was the youngest child and only daughter of William Chalmers Hendricks and Susan Elizabeth "Lizzie" Glass Hendricks. She never married. She graduated from Chico Normal College (nka: California State University at Chico) and was a school teacher her entire working life. This picture was taken in the late 1880's.

The picture was taken in the parlor in the home of Thomas and Mame Hendricks in Chico, CA. Seated at the table from left to right Winona, Scott and Sam Hendricks (children of Billie and Lizzie). Seated at the back wall is Mame and Thomas Hendricks. The date of this picture is unknown. It may have been taken when Winona and Scott attended Chico Normal, which would put the date in the mid to late 1890's.

This is the only known picture of George with his mother. Georgie died in January 1915, seven months after the birth of her son.

This picture is on the steps of George's maternal grandparents house circa 1917, 3650 Washington Street, San Francisco, California. George was raised by his grandfather, Wendell Philucius Hammon and maternal grandmother, Augusta Mary "Gussie" Kenney. George's mother, Georgia Kenney Hammon, died seven months after his birth, June 21, 1914 and his father was ill-prepared to raise him as a single parent. Scott was too much the man about town and playboy. Father and son were never close for the remainder of their lives. George as a young child nicknamed them "Mur" for Augusta and "Baba" for WP. These names stuck with the family to this day.

This is a picture of Lizzie with her grandson George Hammon Hendricks circa 1917. Lizzie was the daughter of Samuel G "Squire" Glass and Susan Springer. In spite of her stern expression, Lizzie was known to have a very sunny disposition. She had extremely bad teeth and had them replaced with wooden false teeth before children Scott Springer and Elizabeth Winona were born.

The picture was taken circa 1932, when Scott ran for Congressman for the U.S. House of Representatives for California's 8 th Congressional District. At the time this included the counties of San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Benito and Monterey.

Francis Monroe Hendricks

Francis Monroe (b. Aug. 27, 1838, d. Nov. 28, 1920) & Martha Ann Redman (1839-1916). In the picture are also their daughter Cora Frances and her husband John Elmore Davis and their children - Isaac Robert, Charles Bynum, Alvis Dwight and Mattie Lou Davis. They are sitting in front of their home that was built by his father John Hendricks in the late 1700s on the 1000 acres of land that David Hendricks Sr. bought along Dutchman's Creek in what was originally part of Rowan Co. but is now Davie Co. NC. David also had a mill on the creek. The house sits right on the Great Wagon Road and the ruts can still be seen in the ground.
