An A-frame wooden structure supports the end of this pipeline that extends from Pillsbury Point. It doesn't appear to be in service, replaced by a bigger, deeper pipeline just a few yards south of this line. |

There are at least eight pipelines extending from shore into West Lake Okoboji. Three reach into Browns Bay south of Maywood Beach. Two extend west from Pillsbury Point. Two more extend south at the west edge of Dixon Beach near The Inn. WahpetonÕs intake reaches east from the south end of Manhattan Beach. Pump houses on shore feed water to all lake area communities. In most cases the pipelines run across hard sand bottoms and terminate with uprights 3 to 10 feet tall. The largest is near The Inn. It's a pipe 18 inches in diameter that reaches 415 feet out from shore and terminates in 54 feet of water. It has a 4-foot-tall concrete base that supports a 5-foot-9-inch-tall standpipe. About 35 feet west of it is a 12-inch pipe reaching out 452 feet into 59 feet of water, the longest pipeline in West Lake Okoboji. Its intake is 12 feet 9 inches tall. This photograph was taken along the larger pipeline in 31 feet of water, 355 feet off shore where the bottom makes a sharp downward bend. It shows the mechanical connections and cement bags that support the couplings. Most of the year, bass and walleye take shelter in the space beneath the bend. |

These railroad tracks are on the south end of West Okoboji, east of Green's Beach. They begin in seven feet of water and extend off shore 75 feet. The tracks were used to launch and remove the large steam-driven passenger boats that provided transportation across the lake before the roads were built. Last used in 1957, they provide a gathering place for small fish after the spawning season. This photo was made in 1998. |
