SD Motorcycle Laws

South Dakota Motorcycle Regulations are known as Chapter 32-20 of the South Dakota Codified Laws.  Riders from other states should review these laws before traveling to South Dakota for the Sturgis Rally.

READ THIS!

Violation of these laws will get you pulled over by law enforcement officers.  While most of these laws are petty offenses and misdemeanors, it is still a reason to light you up and check you out.  While it is possible that you will get off with a warning for the violation that you were pulled over for, if you have been drinking or are in possession of drugs you will be going to jail.  This means that your bike will be towed to the impound yard.  You will then have to make bail, pay your towing fee, and pay your impound fee to get your bike back.  You will then have to return to South Dakota at a later date to go to court.

If you are pulled over by a law enforcement officer while visiting South Dakota on your motorcycle the following tips will help the situation.

bullet

Pull off to the side of the road in a safe location and shut off the engine.

bullet

Remain on your motorcycle and keep your hands on the handlebars until told to do otherwise.

bullet

Be courteous and cooperative.

You will be asked for your drivers license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance.  Know where they are and keep them handy.
