Ginny Freitag's Artist Statement I teach art in Madison’s middle school. I am inspired by family, landscape – especially the lakes, and the vitality of the young people I encounter every day. I have worked in many media in the past, including watercolor, pen and ink, and sculptural relief -type boxes, but right now I love to work with clay. I find the rhythmic rolling of coils to be somewhat of a personal ritual in becoming more at peace with all that I encounter. I think of clay in terms of form, texture, and the firing process. Raku firing is fascinating in that is capable of such extremes. In my
pieces, I work with forms from nature as well as archetypal forms.
Favorite artists such as Klimt, Degas, O’Keefe, and many others find a way
of infusing my pieces. Symbols – such as women as vessels and guardians-
are also very important in the context of my work.
